It can drain your battery, The Passive belt system releases tension on the seat belt when you open the door. If it stays on with the door shut it will kill the battery pretty quick.
The switch that controls this is the "latch" switch inside the door latch itself (outside handle part) The tension reducer part of it is in the seatbelt assy itself inside the door. The switch is activated when you pull the handle on the inside or outside and the the door latch is "released". This reduces tension on the seat belt so you can open the door with the seatbelt buckled. These are on both sides of the car also. Page BF-42 in the FSM will lead you along.
